I just realized that it’s been a week since last I updated this blog. I have totally forgotten to update the blog due to playing Alice: Madness Returns. Bought the game right after I saw it was up on Steam.

It was a fun game, despite all the repetitions. The platformer part of the game was a bit too much, there were times when I would shout “Argg! Not again!” I think the frustration is due to your curiosity to know what happens next but you are being presented with more challenges instead until your brain tires and then you don’t expect anything at all any more.

The best part of the game is the environment of Alice’s twisted wonderland. You get to witness different environments (I think there are like 6 or 7) span through 5 chapters.

A short spoiler up ahead after the jump.

Is this thing on? I am making an announcement here.

Yes, I finished Infamous the other day and perhaps it’s time for my own review about this game?

What is this game?
The sandbox game features a man with electric super power in which the action you made in the game will decide the outcome of the game. Yes, you can choose between being evil or good. Oh yeah, I was playing the evil path.

What is good about this game?
The story and the way the game present the story. The story is presented in a comic book (sort of) way which I found it really interesting. The monologue is good, too (God, I love monologue). Some of the conversation is pretty interesting as well.

If you somehow manage to play close to the end, you gain more super power which creates more destruction which is a stress relief.

So, what is not good about this game?
Bloody repetitive side-quests. Collecting all 350 shards (item required to extend your ‘battery’ so you can release more electricity). Well, you don’t have to do all the side-quests really. Some of the mission is repetitive as well, like you were asked to take down ‘something’ which sometimes may take a lot of effort to complete only to find out that there are more ‘something’s in the area.

Onwards, time for more game!

Should the title be Preview instead of Review?

I downloaded the demo of Batman Arkham Asylum and it was awesome. I honestly didn’t think it turns out to be so good (graphically and the playing experience).

The game is similar to Metal Gear Solid where Batman needs to be as stealthy as Snake, but Batman doesn’t have guns (damn it!). Which brings a huge disadvantage since you can’t snipe… like Snake.

Anyway the game will be out sometime end of this August and what I am really interested in is that we get to play as the Joker (only for PS3 owner though).

Time for the review for Blazblue – Calamity Trigger. Available on PS3 and XBOX360.

Review is after the jump.

What is it?
Blazblue – Calamity Trigger is a fighting game by Arc System Works whom you may be familiar with their famous franchise of Guilty Gear series. Blazblue is the successor of Guilty Gear. The game features 12 playable character and the console version features story mode of each characters.

Gameplay
It’s a fighting game. Each character has their special called “Distortion Drive” and one special that practically kills the opponent called “Astral Heat”. Unlike Guilty Gear (I am sorry I can’t help to compare), this Astral Heat move can only be executed during the last round and when opponent has 20% HP, while in Guilty Gear, you can practically do it anytime and kill (destroy) your opponent in an instant.

The game also features a story mode of each characters, where if you are familiar with Visual Novel (or maybe Melty Blood), then you will probably understand. Basically you will encounter alternate endings and the real ending in which the path depends on your course of actions, like choice you made and the outcome of the battle.

Who is it for?
Fighting game fans! Or maybe if you are just a casual fighting gamer like me (who got his ass kicked often), this game is still fun to play especially the story mode.

What do I think?
This game is awesome. The characters are interesting and the story mode is fun to play, too. The only complain I have is the ugly interface during the menu selection. I have to look carefully what I am selecting, since the interface looks a bit messy. Well, that’s about all the complain. The gallery has awesome arts and I wish I could afford high end equipment to rip those images!

Oh yes, the opening song is good as well. Well, it’s by KOTOKO.

More info after the jump.

Since I didn’t play the XBOX360 version of the game, I didn’t really know which event the demo is. What we know is there’s a new pirate girl (as seen on the image above) in the new PS3 version and she is actually avaible for use. Just go to option and replace her with one of the 4 active characters.

The demo features several small battles and ends with a boss battle… which I lost. Actually I wonder if it’s possible to beat since once my whole party is wiped, the screen says “Coming soon”.

I wish I had the tools to capture the screenshot of the game on PS3.

EDIT: I have decided to get the screenshot with my webcam.

Last week, I purchased Overlord II off Steam since I thought I did not have any games to entertain me. Please mind me, I haven’t finished Cross Edge. I haven’t finished this game as well and so I shall share my thoughts about this game.

What is it?
Overlord II is an RPG game about us being the Overlord, controlling 4 types of minions (as seen on the picture: brown, red, green and blue) to bring destruction upon the humans.

Gameplay
You have minions. Yes, they are those little imps (or goblins whatever) following you at the back and you can order them to cause chaos.

Basically your action will effect your Alignment, being evil or good overlord. You will encounter quests throughout the storyline which effects your alignment depending on the path you choose to complete the quest. You are also able to decorate your Dark Tower (your home), upgrade your minions, buy gears and of course you can find yourself a mistress.

Who is it for?
I guess this is aimed for everyone, I find the story pretty humorous despite the annoying accent of the elves. Glad you get to kill them.

What do I think?
This game is frustrating. I spend hours completing a quest and I accidentally trigger an evil path and I have to replay from the beginning again. I always choose the good path first. There was a quest where you have to conquer a village and you can either subdue the villagers or kill them. I accidentally kill one villager and hence I am stuck. I am not sure if the number of villagers will increase later, but I got pretty frustrated.

If you don’t mind grinding for money and lifestock (to summon minions) then you would want this game.

I just got hold of a brand new (in North America) JRPG game called Cross Edge last Wednesday and I have been playing it enough to write a review about this game.

More information of this game after the jump.

What is it?
Cross Edge is a RPG game featuring characters from many franchises, plus the original characters. It is similar to Super Robot Wars but without mechs/robots. One might be familiar with Morrigan from Darkstalkers or Etna and Prinny from Disgaea. To be honest I never play ALL of the games mentioned in the game.

Gameplay
The storyline are presented similar to a Visual Novel (for those who are familiar). Basically during the conversation, the screen shows a background and the characters involved and their speeches (with voices, too). All the characters ada drawn in 2D which looks pretty good in my opinion.

The battle is presented with enemies on the left and players on the right. Each of players is supplied with and AP (Action Point) which increases at the start of the new turn and decreases when players execute moves. If the moves are executed correctly, the players are able to perform combo moves which means more damage.

Who is it for?
If you don’t mind 2D sprites that may look like an old game and love anime, you may give this game a try if you don’t have anything else to play.

What do I think?
The storyline as usual is pretty flat and predictable where “the enemies will always let you go instead of killing you through out the story”. This game requires a lot of grinding, level wise and items which can only be obtained when you overkill the enemies. The control is a bit frustrating, the animation is slow (but you can skip with L2) and the menu interface is horrible. Some buttons are hard to find, like you need to press ‘triangle’ when you highlight “Status” to access players status customization.

Like I say, you will probably be interested in this game if you watch anime. It’s something that cannot be appreciated by anyone. Of course I play this game because I like some of the characters inside. That’s enough reason for me to play, right?
