I just got hold of a brand new (in North America) JRPG game called Cross Edge last Wednesday and I have been playing it enough to write a review about this game.
More information of this game after the jump.
What is it?
Cross Edge is a RPG game featuring characters from many franchises, plus the original characters. It is similar to Super Robot Wars but without mechs/robots. One might be familiar with Morrigan from Darkstalkers or Etna and Prinny from Disgaea. To be honest I never play ALL of the games mentioned in the game.
Gameplay
The storyline are presented similar to a Visual Novel (for those who are familiar). Basically during the conversation, the screen shows a background and the characters involved and their speeches (with voices, too). All the characters ada drawn in 2D which looks pretty good in my opinion.
The battle is presented with enemies on the left and players on the right. Each of players is supplied with and AP (Action Point) which increases at the start of the new turn and decreases when players execute moves. If the moves are executed correctly, the players are able to perform combo moves which means more damage.
Who is it for?
If you don’t mind 2D sprites that may look like an old game and love anime, you may give this game a try if you don’t have anything else to play.
What do I think?
The storyline as usual is pretty flat and predictable where “the enemies will always let you go instead of killing you through out the story”. This game requires a lot of grinding, level wise and items which can only be obtained when you overkill the enemies. The control is a bit frustrating, the animation is slow (but you can skip with L2) and the menu interface is horrible. Some buttons are hard to find, like you need to press ‘triangle’ when you highlight “Status” to access players status customization.
Like I say, you will probably be interested in this game if you watch anime. It’s something that cannot be appreciated by anyone. Of course I play this game because I like some of the characters inside. That’s enough reason for me to play, right?
